Boston Police Commission is established.

Created by the Massachusetts legislature, its three members are appointed by the mayor with the approval of the Boston Common Council. Mayor Henry Pierce appoints the first three commissioners on June 27, 1878. Power to name the commissioners is assumed by the governor in 1885. The commission is replaced by a single commissioner in 1906.*
